Kevin and Kacey designed the ultimate chillout room. It was dubbed the “Drift Lounge” because it was designed to enhance the inner journeys of those who occupied it. The room was a hit among ravers and became an underground legend, influencing generations of promoters and space designers.
Back in the mid nineties rave promoters were still figuring out how to produce the best events. This was a time when promoters and attendees were learning what worked. A rash of deaths where ravers were noted to have died from overheating resulted in scrutiny and crackdowns. In response, the chill-out room become a rave staple overnight.
At its rudimentary level, the chillout room is a place that encourages relaxation. Core elements include slower music, places to rest, and calming lights. Together these features become a sanctuary for tired dancers. Having such a space can make the difference between a safe event and a deadly one.
In the early days, chill-out rooms were pretty basic. Not much thought went into these environments. Promoters focused their creativity on the DJs and decor of the “main room.”
Chillout spaces remained rather bland until Kevin and Kacey emerged on the scene. The duo elevated these rooms to high art. Their recipe for transformation was simple and effective: Book the best downtempo DJs, showcase the best visuals, and make space for lounging and dancing.
Kevin and Kacey believed that the design of the environment raised the consciousness of its occupants. They brought together a variety of artists working in complimentary fields. Triphop DJs, flow artists, liquid dancers, and video jockeys meshed their together to produce a magical space.
The Drift Lounge first appeared as a small room within a larger raves. As it grew in popularity, Kevin & Kacey started producing the Drift Lounge as it’s own event. They would take over small clubs for a single evening and completely transform the place.
Some of the greatest underground triphop musicians created music specifically for the Drift Lounge. The members of Heads Adrift have been deeply inspired and influenced by these artists. We seek to continue this tradition of creating mesmerizing sounds. Eventually we hope to resurrect the Drift Lounge to allow another generation of disciples to experience the magic.
